The Technology

What is functional sound?

Functional sound is not music, ambient audio, or generic frequency therapy. It is the precise, intentional architecture of sound — specific combinations of frequencies, rhythms, harmonic structures, temporal patterns and dynamic envelopes, designed to produce a targeted biological outcome. The structure of the sound is itself the active ingredient.

Each piece of functional sound content is designed for a particular organism, tissue or functional system: a protocol for equine musculoskeletal recovery differs fundamentally, in its structure, from a protocol for human cognitive performance.

The dual mechanism of action (Human & Animal models)

Pathway 1

Neurophysiological pathway

  1. Auditory perception (ear → auditory cortex) in < 50ms
  2. Activation of the amygdala → hypothalamus axis
  3. Regulation of the HPA axis: ↓ cortisol / ↑ serotonin
  4. Autonomic nervous system shift: sympathetic → parasympathetic
  5. Measurable effect: increased HRV (validated biomarker)

Pathway 2

Mechanical pathway

  1. Low-frequency sound propagating as structural vibration through tissue
  2. Structure-borne vibration: bone structures → fascia → soft tissue
  3. Activation of mechanoreceptors and tissue sensors
  4. Effects on tone, posture and tissue recovery

Dose-Effect Protocols

Designing structured sound is necessary, but not sufficient. Rubesa Universe's distinctive expertise lies equally in understanding how sound produces effect — the dose-effect relationship between exposure and biological outcome.

Each piece of functional sound content is deployed through a protocol: a calibrated exposure regimen, studied and developed together with our scientific partners, that determines not just what sound is delivered, but how much, how often, and for how long — to produce a measurable, reproducible effect.

  • Dose-effect calibration

Determining the exposure parameters (intensity, duration, session frequency, cumulative regimen) that produce a specific, measurable biological response.

  • Protocol co-development

Dose-effect relationships are studied and refined jointly with our university and clinical research partners.

  • From content to protocol

The same functional sound content can be calibrated at different doses for different populations, contexts or objectives; the protocol, not the sound alone, is the deliverable and the point of scientific and commercial defensibility.

The Rubesa Tuning System

At the core of this approach lies the Rubesa Tuning System, a proprietary methodology aligning sound composition with the body's own tissue resonances and circadian rhythms. Our functional sounds are designed to be:

  • Biocompatible

    Entraining biological rhythms and cycles

  • Universal

    Transcending cultural barriers

  • Impactful

    Targeting stress, sleep and pain

  • Natural

    Drawing on natural sound sources

  • Perceptual

    Grounded in psychoacoustic principles

  • Emotional

Evoking a wide emotional range, without musical association

A structured IP architecture, product by product

Our expertise in applying functional sound — the research methodology, the understanding of dose-effect, the Rubesa Tuning System — is the shared foundation across all our models. But this expertise is not, in itself, the technology we deploy: each product arising from our three models (ChronoTone®, AetherExperience, EquiSounds, AudioAnimA, as well as developments under the Plant Model) has required the design of a technology of its own — software, hardware, scientific basis and regulatory pathway, each specific.

Rubesa Universe thus functions as an IP-production structure: each product holds its own intellectual property, clearly siloed from the others. This separation is what allows each IP to be deployed — through licensing, joint venture, consulting or a direct product line — independently of the others, without dilution or cross-dependency.

All new intellectual property is today developed and held by Rubesa Universe itself.
